HYDRA Microphone
Cables My concept in simplicity,
these cables come bundled together in a rugged Techflex sleeve and the
ease of dealing with a single rolled cable instead of two. It snakes off
on each end allowing for easy hookup to microphones and other gear.
Available in any color and a variety of XLR ends. I build each pair by
hand with attention to detail and reliability. Think of the
HYDRA style cable as a Y cable. A single run which branches off on
each end into seperate left/right plugs/jacks. On micorphone cables,
I usually leave a 2' Y at the mic end. Allowing for a 4' spread if
you want. Of course, this can be tailored to each users specific
needs.
THE
WIRE The wire used in HYDRA cables
comes from custom millitary stock wire, typically used for communication
devices in planes and other vehicles and equipment. It is built to a very
demanding and ridged spec for the government, able to withstand much heat
and abuse. I usually use a 26AWG (per conductor) with each having 19
strands of Oxygen Free High Current copper with a heavy silver plating.
These are double wrapped in a rubber shield and then surrounded by a
thicker Teflon coating. Then both conductors are shielded in a silver
plated copper braid. The final coat is a variation of Teflon tape, more
like a plastic. Its resilient, to say the least and excels in passing
electrons. Each run of wire is then fed through 1/8th inch Techflex kevlar
braid, making a single cable that forks at each end w/the connector of
your choice.
THE PARTS
-
Neutrick: any / all parts available upon
request. I typicaly use the right angle XLRs and RCAs standard. Straight
upon requiest. I can also make the customized "shorties" w/the machined
jacks/plugs for the lowest profile and custom fit. *these custom
cut cables are not available for 100% refunds, should you require
one. I also tend to use the nickle finish / silver or nickle
contacts as opposed to the black powdercoated ends. Silly to spend
more money for color. But I do try to keep the black ones in stock
as many people prefer them. No extra cost to you, but just be
warned that I may not have those in stock.
-
Switchcraft (same as above, only no
shorties)
-
custom "low strain" 3.5mm right angle jacks (some
company i've never heard of, but they are very easy on a delicate 3.5mm
jack and do not add any undu strain or pressure on the jack or
PCB.
THE SOUND What can you
expect to hear out of the Hydra Silver cables? Many customers have been
quite surprised at how they appeared to "open up" their microphones,
offering a clearer presentation. The difference is the result of less
resistance introduced by the cable. The super HQ copper and silver plating
offers the best possible signal path to your recorder / preamp so that you
really hear your microphones full sonic characteristics. Of course,
your mileage may very...as they say. Some people swear by
them. Others can't hear a difference at all. I believe how
well you have trained your ear to listen, and the potential resolution of
your playback system (car stereo / ipods need not apply here). Truth
be told, I'm an audio snob. If you want to hear subtlie differences,
dont be surprised if you dont hear them on your less than reference
quality stereo. It always boggles me how some people in the
recording hobby can have $5k in recording gear, paying attention to every
minute detail in their rig...but then listen to it over some big box dept.
store stereo that costs a fraction of what their recording gear
costs. IMO, you need an equal playing field on the playback end of
things in regards to your recording gear.

Microphone and
Interconnects
-
Two channel HYDRA snake.
$10/foot (for the run w/two wires, so its really $5/1')XLRs
can be straight, Right Angled or "chopped" for low profile right
angle). I use the newer style Neutrik MX series right angles,
which are thinner and more "gear friendly" so you can plug in many of
them in jack right next to one another.
-
XLR / RCA / TRS / 3.5mm
(any combo there of) Interconnects. 1 meter or less $50 2m add
$20
-
3.5mm > 3.5mm short ICs are $25
-
S/PDIF 1m or less
$40
- Custom
orders are welcome, and prices will remain fairly
consistant with what you see above.
Speaker cables
-
$10 per foot
for normal two channel. Price is
for pair. so an 8' pair would be $80. I usually leave
bare wire for termination, but can terminate w/any end for a minimal fee (part
costs). If you want bi-wire, add $25 to the order. If you
want shotgun, then order two pairs (doubling the price..but email me and we
can chat about it)
RETURN POLICY: If you
are unhappy w/your cables, a full refund will be given (within a
reasonable time frame) only costing you the return shipping.
However, if you ordered custom ends that have been altered (chopped XLRs
for low profile), then you will be charged a 50% re-stocking fee as I
can't re-use those parts or re-claim the time I used to make them.
Cut XLRs, while popular, are not always "cosmeticaly perfect". I do
my best, but can't please everyone. They work, as advertised, and
that is all I'll garantee.
